The May/June 2019 issue of MBSI's journal, Mechanical Music, is
in the mail now and expected to arrive around May 1 to all members.
This issue contains biographies of people nominated to be on the MBSI
Board of Trustees -- Matt Jaro, David Corkrum, and Bob Caletti --
all long-time members of MBSI and dedicated musical box collectors.
The latest Nickel Notes column by Matt Jaro is a detailed review of
Don Teach's collection in Louisiana and the story of Don's journey to
the pinnacle of the restoration field. The article is accompanied by
high-resolution photos of many of Don's instruments.
In addition, there is a detailed technical how-to article by Charles
Hildebrandt on repairing the take-up roll drive in his wife's Raffin
crank organ and an article on crafting a new brass winding handle for
a Bremond cylinder box with six bells by professional restoration
specialist Bill Wineburgh.
Wayne Meyers then describes the history of the electric banjo player,
including some interesting information about how many of the prototype
machines used electromagnets instead of pneumatics to operate the
machines. Our popular "The Hunt" column is written this issue by
Al Zamba, who tells the story of obtaining a Mermod Freres cylinder
box that once belonged to the man who brought the world "Jello."
Robin Biggins also discusses his experience working on a small music
box with a concealed "sur-plateau" movement hidden in the bottom of an
intricately-carved bone case. The issue is rounded out with chapter
reports from the Southeast, Sunbelt, Golden Gate, and Southern
California chapters.
