Band Organ At The Oaks Amusement Park, Portland
By Mike Schoeppner
I am restoring a basket-case Wurlitzer Style 146 band organ that I was
told came from The Oaks Amusement Park in Portland, Oregon. As with
my other projects, I try to discover as much history as possible about
the instruments. I have been told the organ was originally installed
on the 1912 Herschell-Spillman menagerie carousel that is still at the
park.
Wurlitzer factory records are consistent with the few details I have.
The organ had been scrapped over 30 years ago, though they kept the
façade which was custom made by Wurlitzer. In fact, a friend has sent
me an old photo that possibly shows part of the custom façade.
If anyone has any anecdotes or details about the early days of the
carousel or the organ (photos too) it would be very much appreciated
if you would share them. I have studied current photos and online
videos and see no evidence of a band organ now.
