Favorite Wurlitzer 165 Rolls 6558 & 6661
By Andrew Lardieri

My Two All-Time Favorite Early And Late Style "Wurlitzer" 165 Rolls

After a great number of years extensively listening to Wurlitzer
165 rolls that were or have been produced by the Rudolph Wurlitzer
Co., the two which I would say top my list of "Best Wurlitzer 165"
rolls are early Wurlitzer roll 6558 issued sometime in 1919 and late
Wurlitzer roll 6661 issued during the great depression in 1931.

6558 has some Charles Nilson's best arrangements in my opinion
(even including Harry J. Lincoln's Heaven's Artillery which first
appeared on roll 6502, my all time favorite evergreen 165 roll).

Charles Nilson did a superb job on each tune of this ten-tune
FT/OS/M/W roll and almost knew exactly where to include each verse
and chorus to balance out each arrangement to a tee. If roll 6558
were a culinary dish, I could easily picture it as a prime cut of
juicy and tender bone-in rib-eye steak cooked to a medium rare
finish with a nice helping of lobster mac 'n cheese on the side.

Roll 6661, on the other hand, which was issued during the hard
economic explosion of the great depression in 1931 after Nilson's
death, is a fantastic example of what Wurlitzer could still put
together as a ten-tune roll while cheapening the costs of roll
production to 6 tunes instead of 10 tunes as well as cutting off
certain verses and choruses to save money during the depression.

In conclusion, these are both great, great rolls that I personally
think everyone who is a fan of the Wurlitzer 165 scale like myself
should consider listening to on any style 165 roll playing organ.
