As of 1st January, 2019, the date for music copyright [expiration in
USA] moved forward by one year, the first time since the "Sonny Bono
copyright extension" was introduced 21 years ago. Since then, the
cutoff date for music and other copyright entering the public domain
has been 1922. Now, all publications [granted USA copyright] in 1923
have become Public Domain (PD).
And, thanks to the ever-precise and well-planned Warren Trachtman, all
scanned rolls issued in 1923 are now being made available by the IAMMP
roll archive at http://www.iammp.org/
It just worked, he'd got it all covered 10 or 15 years back when he
coded the site -- just another little part of Warren's legacy to the
whole roll community!
The PD year will continue to advance every 1st January, so many of our
favourite rolls will gradually become available via IAMMP. Only those
where no year of issue was given by the scan-maker will remain
inaccessible.
And, just to spell this out, IAMMP continues to operate and do the job
Warren designed it to do. It's in good hands and is being maintained
(it was down for a while last year, now fixed; the server host had
changed something).
So use it to find some music: http://www.iammp.org/rolldatabase.php
The files publicly available are indicated by hyperlinks and a music
symbol.
