Seek Gulbransen Recordo Upright Player Advice
By Ben Gottfried
Regarding the question on the Gulbransen stacks. It is easy to
determine if it is the glued-up version by looking at the front facing
board of the stack. The glued-up version is usually an "army green"
color and there are just a few large round-head screws -- perhaps nine,
I believe, for each tier running lengthwise across the board.
The later screwed-together version has two machine screws for each
pneumatic and the front board has pneumatic cloth cover strips running
along the length of the board, or maybe a black color without the
strips.
Being as it is a Recordo I would guess it is late and will be the
screwed-together version. You can also check the serial number as
I think they went to the screwed-together version around 1924.
In any event the Gulbransen rebuilding process is more involved than
most on account of the valve design. If in doubt send along a photo
of the front board.
Best of luck,
