Mason & Hamlin and A. B. Chase Player Pianos
By Dave Krall
While perusing Google images of upright Mason & Hamlin pianos, I came across a photo of an upright Mason & Hamlin player piano, sold in 1914 by Skinner auction house. I had never seen an upright M&H 88-note player before and didn't even realize they made them.
How common (or uncommon) are these Mason & Hamlin players and do any MMD members have one or know of any? What brand of player action did they use? (The one in the Skinner auction went cheap: $185.00 and included a roll cabinet.)
Did A. B. Chase make upright players with the conventional style player action and spoolbox in the upper part of the piano, and what brand of player action did they use? I know early 1900s Chase players had an odd player action that mounted in the bottom of the case with a fold-down spoolbox under the keydesk. I installed my Telektra player in a conventional A. B. Chase upright and I know that they are exceptional pianos.
Thanks,
Dave Krall
