Recut Artrio-Angelus Rolls
By Allen Ford

Hi All, I have the set of Artrio-Angelus rolls re-cut in 1971 by
John Malone for Ed H. of Walnut Creek, California, and they played
A-O-K for me back in the day. I was not sure of the spacing but
I just played one on my 1929 Chas. M. Stieff Welte-Mignon and it
is precisely 9-holes-to-the-inch and the re-roll is triggered by
perforations in the number one and two holes in the bass. As I
recall the snake bite holes were slightly off but the Artrio-Angelus
read them easily.

My Artrio-Angelus, an upright made in 1913, stop playing some years
ago when my first wife was in the last year or two of her life.
I have not fixed it because I will be 80 next month and I do not think
it would be a good use of my money at this time unless I win the lotto.

The Charles M. Stieff Co. was in Baltimore, Maryland, making pianos
from 1865 to 1942 and maybe some time after. Stieff also made the
Shaw, Bennett-Bretz, Davies & Son, and Leslie Brothers. The Stieff
showroom, theater, museum, and Welte room building still stand,
somewhat modified, on Howard Street.

Sincerely,
Allen Ford
Maryland
