Hello Mechanical Music Friends, In an effort to introduce more people
to the player piano and AMICA, local club members arranged to bring a
WW1 era player and rolls to our local history museum, Seattle's Museum
of History and Industry (MOHAI), as part of their Armistice Day
Commemoration. The piano was provided by a local member and the museum
paid to have it moved and tuned. It was a glorious old Farrand upright
made by Bush and Lane.
Several members brought WW1 era music rolls, both originals and recuts,
and Deven, our youngest chapter member who is 17, brought a bunch of his
rolls and also played vintage music on the piano by hand to everyone's
entertainment.
About 30 members of the public, with ages ranging from about 6 to well
over 60, had their first chance to pump a real player piano, and the
delight on people's faces was a joy to see. Many sang along with the
rolls including a number of veterans.
The event also allowed the promotion of the 2019 AMICA convention in
Seattle. At least one person determined to attend and many said they
would look forward to our public viewing day of instruments in our
welcome suite at the convention hotel.
Now we are talking with the museum's event folks about bringing a piano
for a holiday player piano sing-a-long party for their members.
All it took was one phone call to get the ball rolling!
Warmly, from chilly Seattle,
Marc Sachnoff
