Dear MMDers, I have enjoyed the thread on Mechanical Music In
The Movies and on TV. Although some of the inputs are repeats
from this thread from several years ago and some are new ones,
even the repeats are interesting because I had forgotten many of
them. I'd like to add to the list, if I may.
This one is a repeat but it is one of my favorite movies. It is
"Just You And Me Kid" from 1979 and stars George Burns, a teenage
Brooke Shield, Burl Ives, Ray Bolger, Leon Ames, Carl Ballentine,
Keye Luke (Charlie Chan's number one son) and several others.
In one scene near the middle of the movie, George starts a roll
playing on a Duo-Art piano in his living room. This plays for more
than a minute. Also featured in the movie is a fabulous mid-1930s
Pierce Arrow automobile.
The second program I recommend is an episode of Midsomer Murders. It
is episode season 18, episode 6 and the title is "Harvest Of Souls".
A significant portion of the episode takes place at a "carnival" and
many antique rides are seen in the background. First is a modern Dean
organ, not playing in the beginning but it plays later in the movie.
Then there is a nifty small swing boat ride and a Steam Yacht ride.
These are rarely seen in the U.S. but were common before WW2 in England
and Europe. Not a lot of music in this one but lots to see for carnival
enthusiasts.
