Unknown "P" Piano Roll "Tie a Little String"
By Marshall Jose

While scanning a large and unsorted collection of rolls, I ran across
two rolls which had lost their boxes, something I have grown accustomed
to. Usually there's enough clues for me to figure out the roll company,
but these two defied my attempts. I've attached a scan from one of
them of the only clue I have, namely a tab with a trademark italic
capital "P", and the title of the roll.

Tellingly, the lyrics appear in a font identical to the one often used
by Imperial/QRS. I can't find a match between roll makers beginning
with P and the number range including the 5900 span, apart from
Paramount, but Paramount had reached that number well into 1932, and
this tune is from 1923. I'd appreciate any help in its identification.

[ I found three different songs with that title:
 [
[ 1. Cal DeVoll: Tie a Little String Around Your Finger
 [ (So You Won't Forget That I Love You); (C) 29 Dec. 1922
[ 2. Vincent Youmans: Tie A String Around Your Finger; (C) 1924 Harms

 [ 3. Seymour Simons: Tie A Little String Around Your Finger;
 [ (C) 1930 M. Witmark & Sons
[ (YouTube has several recordings of this 1930 tune by Simons.)
 [
[ QRS published this piano roll in mid-1931:
[ Tie a Little String Around Your Finger (Cal DeVoll),
 [ p.b. J. Lawrence Cook 5118 [circa mid-1931]
 [ Ref. Billings Rollography, p. 152

[ The song title appears on "O" roll O-939 at
 [ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWJg5-uRxbo
 [ and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjNiiESZrI0
[ and also on Wurlitzer Style 153 roll #13208 at

[ Maybe the "P" is for "Pennant"? See
