A few days ago I posted a request here for help in determining if the
4-digit number that appears just before the rewind perforation on some
Artrio-Angelus popular rolls is the roll number of a related Mel-O-Dee
issue [180806 MMD, Relationship of Artrio-Angelus & Melodee Rolls].
I have received several helpful responses that need to be worked
through. However, based on the response I got from John Tuttle, I am
able to ascertain that Artrio-Angelus 2003 ("What-Cha Gonna Do When
There Ain't No Jazz," Wendling/Banta), which bears the 4-digit number
3963 just before the rewind, is the twin of Mel-O-Dee 3963.
John sent me a number of scans, and I immediately recognized one title
as being nearly identical to the title of Artrio-Angelus 2003, which
I scanned about a month ago. (The difference is that the scan gives
the title as "Wha-Cha..." instead of What-Cha...") On comparing the
note fields of the two scans it is clear that they were made from the
same master roll, but with the expression fields suppressed in the
Mel-O-Dee issue.
I hoped to reconstruct the punch matrix for Mel-O-Dee 3963 from the
scan so that I could show an exact match with the previously
reconstructed punch matrix for Artrio-Angelus 2003, but unfortunately
there was too much phase noise in the scan to allow punch matrix
reconstruction to take place.
I hope to work through the clues that John and others have provided
over the next few weeks and months. This initial success suggests that
we will be able to establish a correspondence of many Artrio-Angelus
and Mel-O-Dee rolls.
