88-note MIDI File Player Controls Expression
By Spencer Chase
I just got the [July/August 2018] AMICA bulletin and read the many
fine articles in this issue. What a great issue! After reading the
article by Frank Himpsl I downloaded all the MIDI files from the
AMICA web site. Wow, what a collection!
For me the only problem is that these are 88-note roll files and were
intended to be interpreted on a player piano so there is no dynamic
variation. This prompted me to dig out a program I wrote awhile ago;
I call it Pianola Player or something like that. I had written various
versions using different GUIs such as a gamepad and who knows what
else.
The most recent version only needs a mouse. A little window traps the
mouse while you play and the mouse motion controls dynamics as well as
tempo. You can accent either bass or treble separately but it has been
a while and I forget the details.
Also you can record the results for later playback but the help file
is not up to date and does not mention how this works but it is easy
to explain and I should be able to edit the help file to add the
information.
If anyone wants to try the program, I can send it as is to play with.
I tried it a little and it does seem to work, but it has been years. :)
