1914 Steinway Upright with Welte Changer
By Dave Krall

Bill Frisk inquired about a 1914 Steinway Welte that was later
equipped with a roll changer. I believe it was around 1928 that
Welte introduced the Welte Multi-Control for Welte Mignon pianos.

These roll changers were made by the Automatic Musical Instrument
Company of Grand Rapids, Michigan. They used an 8-roll carousel
arrangement similar to that used on their National Coin Piano, but
re-designed, more robust and sophisticated.

A few years earlier (1925-1926) Welte offered the Multi-Control for
their pipe organs which used a vertical bicycle chain driven carousel
arrangement that held 10 rolls. I am nearing completion of a total
restoration of one of these bicycle chain changers.

There is some information on the Multi-Control here:

John Wrasse owns one of the 8-roll piano changers (I think it came off
of a Bush & Lane piano) and attached are some photos John had sent me.
