Paper For Making Player Piano Rolls
By John Chaplain

Hi, I just stumbled upon this MMD site and I see some messages about

making piano rolls using a laser cutter. I built such a system with

a 2.5 laser and I wrote the software (using visual basic) to parse

MIDI files into G-code for arduino stepper motor control. I will share

pictures when this is complete.

My question is: Does anyone know what the best paper to use to cut

piano rolls is? I just ordered a 1000-ft. roll of 12"-wide white butcher

paper. The laser will cut this fine, but then I will cut off the extra

.75 inches using a razor and a steel rule. No problem there.

I hope the paper I'm buying will work well though. I really like the

machine that John Grant posted a picture of and mine will work similarly.

I would love to hear any suggestion on player piano paper or just on the

laser-cutting approach in general.

Regards,

John Chaplain

[ In the post-war era, when paper and other materials were still in

[ short supply, the T.R.T. Manufacturing Company (Ralph Tussing) used

[ butcher paper to make Wurlitzer music rolls, as evidenced by the

[ orangish color of the paper and the watermark found on some rolls:

  [ "keeps meat fresh."
