3D Printed Metal Parts May Be Porous
By Doug Bullock
Having dabbled with 3D printing, I found that things made using
this technology have a quirk. If you look closely at the finished
product -- under a microscope as it were -- the object looks like
it was made of strips of toothpaste.
This makes everything look a bit like a log cabin in makeup, where
there is air between the logs or toothpaste strips. This means that
anything we made was far from airtight. This sort of puts the kibosh
on making switches or any airtight parts.
Has this problem been solved? Can airtight parts now be made using
3D printing?
