You'd think that after many years of reading the MMD I'd know more
about music(al) boxes, but there you are. A huge Symphonion disc music
box showed up with a lady who didn't know how to use it, so she asked
Kinsler the Expert. I gradually figured it out: for the device seems
in perfect condition.
We were hoping to learn more about this elegant, uh, thing, and perhaps
find more discs for it based on the following information:
The serial number is 485853. The steel disc that was inside it has holes
around its outer edge. It plays "Home Sweet Home," measures 13-1/4
inches in diameter if I measured it right, and is numbered 12344.
The box is in such good shape that I assumed that it must be a
reproduction, but there's no other evidence for that.
Oh: this box has two controls. One is a pull-out knob near the winding
crank on the side of the box, and the other is an oddly-shaped stamped
steel affair inside the right-hand rear corner of the box, near the
periphery of the discs. Both of these will start and stop the disc
rotation, though the knob only does so if the disc is in some sort of
parked position.
Any information or condemnation would be helpful. Your reward will be
in Heaven.
