Servicing the Piano Action in a Duo-Art Grand
By Ben Gottfried
Robert Rothschild asks about how to remove a player action from
a Steinway Duo-Art. The process is fairly straightforward as any
of us in the field know. First you remove the junction blocks under
the keybed, next the levers and sometimes the lever plates and
hinged keyslip. After that the air motor on the right and the
junction block on the left.
I suppose you could pull the hoses off the junction block on the left
if you don't want to unscrew it. There are also the two linkages to
the spool box to remove. Having done all of that the action is now
ready to slide out and you can easily de-tube the spool box from the
action.
You will need to re-install the center junction block after you have
done your action work as the key frame shifter pushes on it. You may
also want to remove the double acting pneumatic and the key frame
shifting pneumatic (if so equipped) to give the piano a cleaner
appearance.
I would suggests you leave the stack and all the components behind it
in the piano should someone wish to restore the piano in the future.
Remove the belly cloth if you want to. Save all the stuff you remove
for future use.
We all hate to see pianos like this "gutted" but at least if all the
parts are saved the future is not quite as dim and you have a nice
piano that is serviceable without all the player stuff in the way.
