I read with great interest John Rutoskey's appraisal of
http://mechanicalmusicradio.com/ and I'm pretty sure the operator,
James Dundon, will take on board any constructive comments.
Many of us lament here on MMD the reasons why mechanical music doesn't
enjoy the popularity it once did. Having given this subject a lot of
thought, and taken on board many comments on the 'whys and wherefores',
I always come back to three words: Exposure! Exposure! Exposure! Or
indeed for the case of our interest, _lack of!_
None could argue that the owner of this radio station is not doing his
part in addressing this issue. Obviously organ music is his forte,
but looking at the programme other instruments are also catered for.
However, no man is an island, and he will be limited to what he can
actually play with recordings he has available to him. In this age
of hi-tech, it never ceases to amaze me at how many high quality
amateur recordings of other instruments are out there on YouTube.
I'm sure if some of these up-loaders, having taken time and trouble
to present multiple titles on the instrument of their choice, were
to send a montage of sound files of, say, an 18.5" Mira for example,
or whatever, I'm sure they would be gratefully received and help the
owner in offering a diversity.
The work he is doing, alone, should not be underestimated. With
a little consideration, there is an opportunity for organisations such
as MBSI, MBSGB, AMBC, MOOS, and PPG, etc., to get behind this venture,
a little money spent on advertising goes a long way, the diversity
would be most welcome and who knows, hopefully each group may pick up
a few new members.
If James reads this, I would hope he will consider promoting MMD also
on his radio station, for this Digest is pretty much the only media
that keeps the world of mechanical music in tune with each other on
a global scale, the rest of us are merely fringe groups.
