Lately when I've had the time I've been embarking on a project of trying to
track down information about tunes that are on some of my antique music
boxes: tune name, name of work from which it may have come (opera, operetta,
etc.) composer, and date of composition. It can be a challenge as many
of you know. Tune sheets often have abbreviations, handwriting that may
be pretty, but is difficult to read.
The good news is that it is much easier than it used to be because of
Internet resources. Well, enough for the preamble.
The latest project involves a circa 1880 box and one tune has me stumped.
The tune name is given as "Sama" (or possibly Lama). The genre is "waltzer"
(waltz), and the composer is Carl Millöcker. Carl Millöcker wrote some
16 or 17 operettas and an opera or two, all but one or two of which seem
to now be obscure.
Does anybody happen to know of a waltz by Millöcker with the name of Sama,
or that has Sama in its title and, if so, which of his operettas it was
from? Armed with that I could determine the dates.
