Raising the Profile of Mechanical Music
By Ed Chaban
"Why listen to a music box?" A most interesting question! The
fascination younger generations have with "old" vinyl LP records and
vacuum tube amplifiers comes to mind. They say they want the full
experience -- double LP albums with great cover graphics and a place
to pull the seeds out, or your weed. But I digress...
I own a Steinway OR and Victor XIV phonograph. The latter is visually
bad but is in great shape from an audio standpoint. I once had a nice
Victor Orthophonic phonograph as well. I'd demonstrate them all by
playing recordings of Rachmaninoff on each. It was quite an education
for those that were interested.
Then there's the visuals -- a roll of paper or a drum or disc rotating
and seeing strikers hit bells, or a wind motor running or a needle in
a groove -- it's all part of the experience.
If you want to "time travel" from a musical standpoint, you need to
listen to and see music played on the machines that people listened to
back then.
