Rolls of the type Mr. Stewart is describing were manufactured by
both the Aeolian Corporation and the American Piano Control (APC).
One can tell the difference most easily by serial numbers.
APC rolls were apparently numbered from as low as #33 up to #30,550
as far as I know. Aeolian rolls were numbered in an 80,000 series,
followed by a 90,000 series, then finally a 300,000 series. There are
color differences between the labels as well, but aging has discolored
many of them.
This applies only to 88-note rolls. Numbering for 65-note roll series
are also different. Aeolian was the primary manufacturer of these.
