Anders Linde, of Gothenburg, Sweden, is compiling a list of all the
pre-1940 recordings of the classic jazz standard, "When The Saints
Go Marching In" (with its different name variations); he observes,
"Piano roll recordings are obviously an integral and important part
of this."
He has obtained piano rolls by both QRS and Aeolian which bear the
variant title, "When the Saints Come Marching In". This title is
almost the same as appears on the copyright granted Thomas A. Dorsey
("Georgia Tom" Dorsey) in 1924:
When all the saints come marching in;
w and m Thomas Dorsey, of U.S.
(C) 1 c. Oct. 23, 1924; E 602536 : Chicago music pub. co., Chicago.
It bothers me, though, that neither roll sounds like a pre-1940s
performance. Links to MP3 audio files of the Aeolian and QRS rolls are
below. QRS 3554 sounds like J. Lawrence Cook in his post-WW2 style.
Aeolian 1037 was arranged by Clyde Ridge in the early 1960s and
probably was edited later by J. L. Cook.
The Billings Rollography gives this data about the QRS 3554:
8/26 WHEN ALL THE SAINTS COME MARCHIN' IN (Blue Bird Negro Spiritual)
[Unknown Author] played by Theodore Johnson
"Blue Bird Ballads" was a QRS label design typically appearing on
piano rolls of songs sung by choral groups -- including, I suppose,
gospel songs; a link to an image of the label is below.
Please help me obtain for Anders the original QRS 3554 Blue Bird Ballads
roll of "When All the Saints Come Marching In."
