The Tushinsky Vorsetzers & Their Fates, Part 2
By Jim Miller

Vorsetzer No. 0:
At some time later, this machine/instrument was given to this writer,
to be later sold to a stock broker residing in the West San Fernando
Valley, it then a bit later being re-built by Larry Broadmoore of San
Fernando proper. As far as I am aware, it is playing-still and, has
a good, honored placement and life.

Vorsetzer No. 1:
This instrument was re-built by Iver and Vel Becklund, then of "The
Bellflower Player Piano Co.," and went on to serve for all of the
"Keyboard Immortals" broadcasts, those as well as the two public
presentations of "Keyboard Immortals Play Again - In Concert!"
(Held in late January of 1967 and, in the summer of 1968 respectively.
More on these key events and involved personalities at some other time
and place.) Also, it as well was given to this present writer in the
later Eighties, just before J.S.T.'s untimely, tragic demise.

As not unusually, but rather, most characteristically, Naughty
Circumstance was to auto-array and dictate that it's ultimate fate
was _not_ to be one good. This poor, misbegotten instrument (in
terms of what it's ultimate fate was to be) had been to-purpose
modified severely over time, having been added to and subtracted
from impressively; and so, as a result, had thus become but a ghost
of what the noble thing had been originally.

It was parted-out and scrapped, mostly, in 2005, this due to a rude but
necessary relocation (due also to a like-influence as described first
above) forced upon it's forever hapless owner. Presently, only it's
treble side, pedaling assembly and gear box survive. (R.I.P. No. 2!)
This tragedy, as did befall it, happily was not to be a bad turn made
totally complete, as it's remaining parts are scheduled to be
re-vivified within a new "No. 6" instrument which, more than likely, no
Tushinsky is ever to own.

Vorsetzer No. 2:
The legendary, unique and grand (in it's own singular way) Ampico
Vorsetzer of 1967 was to never change hands, remaining J.S.T.'s
property until his universally lamented, most sad passing. I
personally witnessed it's being 'deep-sixed' within a huge gaping
hell of a dumpster, that had been parked outside the Encino house,
it's sole ignoble task having been to swallow-up all things appurtenant
Tushinsky. To this writing viewer of back then, it was a distressing
sight to behold. (Naturally, and so-especially, as regarding his
laboriously-crafted 83-note finger-set, which was to vanish - "poof!" -
into all of Eternity!)

In a key way, it was a good thing that Mel Shores had pre-deceased
J.S.T., this bit of fortuitousness acting kindly so as to disallow
to him any knowledge of such a cruel, insolent demise, as his very
first Vorsetzer creation most certainly was mistreated-to. (Oddly,
depressingly, there are no extant photo-graphic images of the unique
item, although it was to be heard in quite a number of "Keyboard
Immortals Play Again . . . in Stereo!" broadcasts. So, at very least,
there is that trace of it remaining to any future, curious/interested
posterity.)

To be continued.
