I read with interest the post by Daniel Davis & his search for Regina
Sublima Piano music rolls. The Murtogh D. Guinness Collection here at
the Morris Museum includes a beautifully restored instrument along with
three recut music rolls from around 1980 or so.
The instrument was restored for Guinness by Alan Lightcap and the
three recut music rolls are labeled as having come from Durward Center
(Baltimore, Maryland). I'm not sure if he made them himself or
sub-contracted the job, but they are excellent.
Recut 1: Maple Leaf Rag; Black Cat Rag; Bos'n Rag; That Tired Feelin,
Rag; Manhattan Rag.
Recut 2: On the Belvedere; Assembly Waltz; Popularity Waltz; Sweetheart
(Mein Schatz) Waltz; The Reveille, March.
Recut 3) Giggler March & Two Step; Wedding of the Winds, Waltz; Baby
Parade; Impassioned Dream, Waltz; Jack Tar, March.
Another collector you might want to reach out to would be Bob Yates
(Glenshaw, Pennsylvania), as I seem to vaguely recall our discussing
this subject many, many moons ago. Both Durward and Bob can be found
in the MBSI directory.
As a conservator and knowing these instruments, I highly advise anyone
with original Regina Sublima Music Rolls, to avoid using them in your
instrument. At 100 years age, a vast majority of these original heavy-
paper rolls will be extremely prone to damage during operation, even
under ideal circumstances. Quality recuts are the way to preserve and
retain this musical heritage moving forward.
So as to nurture this preservation effort, the Morris Museum has in
the past loaned music (media) for scanning and recut projects, asking
only that the original be returned along with one copy of the recut
when made. If a new Regina Sublima Music Roll recut project is
launched, we would definitely appreciate knowing about it and may
consider participating in a similar way if needed.
