Passing of Luuk Goldhoorn, Musical Box Historian
By Paul Bellamy

From Ted Brown:

The passing of Luuk Goldhoorn is another great loss in research into
the world of mechanical musical instruments. He collaborated for many
years with the late Anthony Bulleid. It was through that connection
that Paul Bellamy first got to know of him.

When Anthony set out for Paul the structure of The Nicole Factor Book
in Mechanical Music, Luuk was at first reluctant to collaborate directly
with someone he did not know at that time but Anthony did not want to
act as an intermediary.

Anthony was slowing down and more anxious to complete his Tune Sheet
Book project and articles called 'Oddments.' Anthony had asked me, as
the editor of his Tune Sheet Book and its first two supplements, to
edit the 3rd supplement. By now, Paul had joined me in assisting
Anthony in this area of research.

On learning this, Luuk offered to produce a 'Search Engine' for the
Musical Box Tune Sheet. His idea was to enable anyone owning a musical
box to use its tune sheet as a way of quickly examining 400 examples.
It was a brilliant idea, which Anthony accepted. Thus Paul and Luuk
worked together for over a year and the supplement and search Engine
were published at the same time.

Luuk will be sorely missed.

From Paul Bellamy:

In addition to Ted's words I would like to add the following. Having
worked with Luuk on the his search engine and learning how meticulous
he was, Luuk wanted me to include references to his past works in my
book The Music Makers of Switzerland. I was pleased to do so and it
resulted in an invitation to his apartment in Utrecht. He was indeed
a very private person, possibly somewhat shy, but we spent a long
and enjoyable day talking and playing his extensive collection of
instruments. We continued from time-to-time exchanging emails on a
variety of subjects.
