Ibach Pianos Delivered to Welte, Hupfeld & Popper
By Marc Widuch

The picture [link below] shows an Ibach-Welte grand piano, being owned
by Konrad Adenauer 1924-1936. Unfortunately the Welte mechanism got
lost during or after WW2. Adenauer also had a 1920 Roenisch Phonola
grand piano, today to be seen in the Bruchsal museum.

The analysis of the Ibach deliveries to Welte, etc., has been completed
today. Final data: Ibach delivered 166 pianos to Welte. The first one
(upright piano) delivered March 27th, 1912, with serial number 67405.
The last one (a grand piano) was delivered November 27th, 1928, with
serial number 94348. Circa 60% were upright pianos, circa 40% grand
pianos. Circa 85% prior to 1924 were most likely for Welte T100 (Red).

I'm not sure on how the Welte internal numbering system on the wind
chests is to be understood. They punched "IBxx" or "JBxx" onto these,
but some have it, some not. We have seen instruments with, for
example, IB5 and IB9, but based on the Ibach piano serial numbers and
delivery lists, 40 more instruments had been delivered to Welte in the
meantime. Maybe someone has an idea? If you have an Ibach-Welte
instrument and we do not have it in our list of still existent
instruments, please share the data. It surely helps to better
understand the history of Ibach-Welte manufacturing.

Three grand pianos out of the 166 pianos had returned to Welte after
the installation of the Welte player mechanism in Freiburg. The first
one is the 87182 which went to K. Adenauer. The second one is the
87909, the Poessenbacher designed grand piano. (Two of these had been
built; one without the Welte system went to the Adlon hotel in Berlin,
the other one with the Welte system went to a rich industrialist in the
Rhein area). The third one, serial number 87167, we have no data on
this one yet. Do you? We think these three very special instruments
for very special customers had been sold and delivered by Ibach
themselves.

In 1914 Ibach delivered one (most likely the only one) upright piano
to Popper & Co. for an Estrella. Circa 50 pianos had been delivered
to Hupfeld -- many of these to a dealer in UK.
