Did Chester Kuharski ever write a book or articles about reproducing
pianos? I may have asked about him before, for it was from him that
I learned what a reproducing piano was. He said I'd get a big finder's
fee if I could locate a Duo-Art for him.
Chet was a solid, sturdy Polish guy, probably from Milwaukee. I met
him in 1971 when we were both broadcast transmitter engineers at radio
station WTSO-AM, 1070 kHz, 10,000 watts, in Madison, Wisconsin. He'd
been there for years, while I was a newcomer with a great deal to learn.
Chet was, well, conservative. Our station was about as low-key as
you could have found; "MOR", they called it, for "middle of the road."
We mostly played music like Perry Como or the Carpenters and ran a talk
show at night, but some of the guys liked to push the envelope a bit.
One of the other engineers told how Chet, a strict Roman Catholic, flew
into a righteous rage when one of the DJ's at the studio (20 miles away
from the transmitter that we minded) played Bob Dylan's "Lay Lady, Lay"
one fine afternoon.
Thirty years later I happened upon this group, and there I read a post
by someone who quoted one Chester Kuharski's writings on the Duo-Art as
if it were Deuteronomy.
