FS Free: Hupfeld "Universal" in Pennsylvania
By Philip Jamison
I just inspected an odd player near my shop in southeastern
Pennsylvania. It's an early electric Hupfeld Universal. The
entire payer mechanism, including the spoolbox and stack, is
located under the keys. I think it plays the Hupfeld 77-note rolls.
Like most of the German players, it's an elaborate and beautiful
mechanical design. I'd hate to have to change a bass string. It looks
complete and never restored. The only missing parts are the sconces
and (maybe) the electric motor (it would need to be changed to 110 vac
anyway). Take a look at the photos.
The current asking price is "zero." The lady just wants it hauled away
before they move into the house. I'm not sure when that is, but I can
suggest a good local mover who could store the piano while you make
arrangements.
