Does anyone have a good photo of a vacuum pump known to have come
from an Auto-Typist, clearly showing the metal frame, crank assembly,
and bellows?
Does anyone have an original ad from Monarch Tool and Machine in
Covington, Kentucky, showing an identical pump?
Terry Hathaway is writing a comprehensive history of the roll-changing
National Automatic Music coin piano made in Grand Rapids, Michigan, for
the Mechanical Music Press web site. We're interested in establishing
whether or not the metal-framed National pump is identical to the
Auto-Typist, or just based on a similar concept.
We already have pictures of the similar pump used in certain Berry-Wood
pianos, but having a different metal frame, vacuum connection, feet,
and crankshaft support. We also have pictures of the earlier National
pump with four small bellows mounted in one plane on the bottom, and
arranged in two pairs with the open ends facing each other.
If the National is indeed the same as the Auto-Typist, that would
suggest a common supplier used by both companies. Original advertising
from Monarch might prove whether it was the supplier.
