CDs Of New Wurlitzer 165 Band Organ Rolls
By John Grant
Concerning David Kelzenberg's desire for CD (audio) recordings of
Wurlitzer 165 band organ rolls, while I share his sentiment, I believe
it may be a complicated process to do so.
I am not privy to the policies and procedures of those who arrange and
issue these rolls, however, I will _assume_ (always dangerous!) that
they are adhering to the requirements of U.S. statutes with respect to
compositions which are (still) under copyright and not in the public
domain. Duplication ("mechanical") licenses are typically predicated
on a given number of copies to be produced and sold.
I imagine Glenn Thomas and others in the trade have a pretty good idea
as to what the demand for the rolls may be and to prosecute their
mechanical licenses accordingly. I also imagine that predicting that
same demand for audio CD issues would be more challenging. If they
were so inclined to issue CD recordings of the rolls containing
copyrighted material, it may make better business sense to offer them
on a subscription basis, so that demand, in advance of production,
could be more precisely predicted.
