Hi Folks, A few days ago I sent a reply describing a noise reducing
muffler for a calliope [17.07.17 MMDigest]. At the time I couldn't
find any pictures of the actual muffler that I made 30 years ago.
The Wolfe calliope is now housed in the New York State Museum of
Transportation in Rush, New York (near Rochester). So this weekend
I visited the museum and took a picture of the muffler. Unfortunately,
they had it in storage so I couldn't get a full picture but I did lift
up the back of the covering and got a picture of the back of the
muffler. It's flush with the back of the calliope case and it fits
just inside the outer row of pipes. If someone needs a better picture,
I can go back out and ask them to unwrap the calliope so I can take
more pictures.
By the way, they commented that they didn't use the calliope much since
it was so loud. I asked them if it was still too loud with the muffler
on it. It turns out that they never used the muffler because they
thought it was just a dust cover.
Regards,
Craig Smith
