I was listening to Mr. Stibbons' MIDI files on Synthetic Expression
[170802 MMDigest]. Ever since I first heard standard piano rolls on my
QRS Pianomation system I always wanted to have expression in the music.
For some reason, when a piano roll is played back on a standard
pneumatic player it has more personality than MIDI files played back
on a modern solenoid player. I guess it has to do with variable vacuum
or the piano itself.
But, expression is always welcome to my ears. I love the reproducer
roll files that have expression. I like to see this venture into the
area of expression for the piano rolls.
I have a sequencer program, Power Tracks Pro, that has a randomizer
that has a few different settings and it seems to do a pretty good
job in giving the piano roll files some expression. The only catch is,
not all rolls sound good put through this random process, and when you
run the random process it is different each time, so the results are
unpredictable. That may be good or bad depending on what you are
after.
I have attached a copy of Mr. Stibbons' file put through this randomizer
to see the difference. Mr. Stibbons, I would be interested in your
synthetic expression maker. It sounds good. Thanks for sharing.
