After nearly a year in the Rhode Island shop of Bob Newman for
a number of repairs and upgrades, the Wurlitzer 153 at Canobie Lake
Park in Salem, New Hampshire, is back on the carousel. The organ
was taken out of service last August in part due to an erratic rewind
problem that turned out to be clogged ports in the coupler. Since
last August, the carousel has been accompanied by recorded music.
Starting last Wednesday, the organ itself has been playing up a storm
and it sounds and looks fantastic. The facade has been properly
restored and re-painted and the screen painting has been removed to
reveal the swell shades that have always been on the organ.
Most important, a Klinger Organ MIDI system, including an SD MIDI
ReadeR has been added. While it is still possible to play using the
duplex roll system, the primary music source going forward will be
MIDI. Over the past year, the park's entire collection of more than
100 rolls has been converted to MIDI files. The result is that it is
now possible to listen to the organ for a full day without ever hearing
a duplicate tune!
I spent nearly six hours last Wednesday listening to this incredible
instrument that played without a hitch before I tore myself away for
the trip back home. Here are 3 links to some short videos I made
during my visit.
