Greetings from New Zealand! The Photoplayer Restoration Trust is
advancing towards the end of the restoration. We now have all the
percussion instruments restored and over the next few months will have
the two side cases assembled and the percussion instruments installed.
At this time the 22 carvings for the front of the side cases are being
carved. In the New Year we will be installing the organ pipes into the
right side case.
At this time I would like to research and record as much information
I can about [silent] film music rolls. I know many 88-note piano rolls
were used in theaters. The American Photo Player Company printed a
selection of standard rolls cued for Fotoplayer use. These were listed
under headings like Gallops, Patriotic, Dramatic, and Sentimental etc.
But what about other instrument makers -- did they make lists or
specific rolls for their machines? For example, Wurlitzer "O" rolls
and "PC" rolls or Seeburg's "H" rolls, and all the other companies.
If you have any specific information on film or picture rolls for any
instrument I would appreciate your knowledge. Did any film companies
have rolls cut to go with their films? I know Charlie Chaplin composed
music for his films but did anyone cut rolls?
Hoping some of you can fill in the gaps in my knowledge for me.
