Greetings all! Mislabeled Welte rolls surface from time to time,
and I have the following to offer on Peter Phillips' unknown
Welte roll:
http://www.mmdigest.com/Attachments/17/07/08/170708_205947_Mireille%20Waltz%20(Gounod)%20Goodall.mp3
The title of the piece is "Les lames", in e minor, Opus 33. It
is roll number 2005, not 29XX. The piece was written by Irene
Eneri-Gorainoff [or Goriainoff]. She was born Irene Biriukov, in
Ostrogojsk, in 1897, sometime between the 2nd and 15th of November.
She died in Paris, January, 1980.
She was a child prodigy, making her debut at age 11 in 1909. She
appeared at a concert in Bechstein Hall later that year, playing
Handel's Variations in D minor. She composed and then recorded Welte
roll 2005, as well as two other pieces, during the Welte Russian
recording sessions in 1910, either in Moscow or Saint Petersburg.
Since this roll was recorded in 1910, a master would likely have been
forwarded to America, prior to the Great War.
I may be wrong on some minor points, but welcome corrections.
John McClelland
