Jesse French String Driven Tracking Mechanism

We have a Jesse French and Sons player from 1926 with a string driven
tracking mechanism.  The string is broken.  We can probably get it
working through trial and error, but it sure would be a help if there
were a set of instructions on how to properly set up and adjust this
mechanism.  Can anyone offer some advice on this?
