Lead Tubing in Player Pianos
By Nicholas Simons

Gordon Stelter gives us his opinion on originality in old German
pianos using lead tubing. I challenge him, therefore, to restore
a Poppers orchestrion where the tracker bar tubing is tightly routed
down the back of the stack, within the narrow areas between each
section of the playing pneumatics. Only lead tubing will hold its
shape and be thin enough to fit into the available space.

As for lead tubing in a piano being a death sentence for anyone in
the same room, if that were the case we'd all be dead by now. Simple
precautions taken during restoration are all that are required. There
are more risks out in the real world than there ever could be in the
world of our hobby. Learn to rank your risks. What's next, banning
hot glue due to mad cow disease?
