I read with interest the comments that Mark Kinsler made concerning
politically incorrect music. In 2012 a gentleman came into our
retirement village office and wanted to donate a large box of sheet
music -- over 600 titles. The receptionist refused the donation
but I was there and asked to see the material.
Two other resident musicians joined me and we discovered that this music
was wonderful music for piano dating from the 'teens, 'twenties, and
'thirties. One of our musician residents had a degree in library
science and offered to list these titles in a database in alphabetical
order. Since that time the word got out about our sheet music library
and we now have around 20,000 titles.
But as music came in, we decided to discard "Politically Incorrect"
music. Sheet music with hooded KKK images, songs using the "N" word and
other similar words have been deleted from the collection. I suggested
that we keep this music in a separate file for future research but that
idea was voted down, so the library is pretty clean of questionable
titles and artwork.
People looking for a particular title can come and check the database
and if we have it, we will make one copy for their personal use. Quite
often we have songs from those early years that someone is looking for,
and the library has made many musician friends researching old tunes
from WW1 forward.
