Hupfeld Orchestrion Restoration Articles
By Nicholas Simons

[ Ref. Don Taig in 170522 MMDigest ]

I have restored quite a few German orchestrions, including a Phonoliszt
and a keyboard style Helios. You really don't need any specific
information, apart from the scale which is readily available. All you
need is a good four-dimensional brain and some experience with exotic
pianos. The rest you can work out for yourself.

As for removing the lead tubing, by all means go ahead and replace it
if it has corroded badly and is leaking, but you must replace it with
the like. The advantage of lead is that it stays where you put it
whereas silicone or neoprene will try to straighten itself and you may
have much difficulty keeping it routed in the narrow places behind the
stack.

As for the rest of the restoration, always use traditional materials
and glues.

Sincerely,
Nicholas Simons, GB
