Ghosts in the Machine (a conference on player-pianos),
May 4-6, 2017, at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York
Hello, I would profoundly appreciate your help spreading the word about
this event:
Ghosts in the Machine: Technology, History, and Aesthetics of the
Player-Piano will be a fascinating conference, taking place at
Cornell University, May 4-6, 2017. The interdisciplinary program
encompassing music, technology, media and performance studies (and
much more!), offers an amazing cast of speakers and performers
from around the world. The menu includes almost 20 talks, two
roundtables, and three concerts.
On the night of May 4, world-renowned pianolist Rex Lawson, from the
UK Pianola Institute, will give a unique performance with his 1911
pianola (a push-up mechanism with wooden fingers), accompanied by
Roger Moseley, Shin Hwang, Miri Yampolsky, Elizabeth Lyon, and Alexa
Schmitz. Highlights of the program include Stravinsky's own
spectacular performance of Rite of Spring, which we will hear (and
see) 'live' via Mr. Lawson, his pianola, and Barnes Hall's Steinway.
Other performances include the world premiere of Trapiche, Sergio
Cote's latest piece for player-piano and piano, and a recital by
master pianolist Bob Berkman (featuring an interactive performance
for player-piano and a 1909 phonograph).
Papers and presentations, including distinguished keynote speaker
Georgina Born (Oxford University), promise an appealing assemblage of
topics and perspectives, from the dynamics of the piano roll industry
and the intricacies of reproducing pianos to issues of performance
practice, computation, and MIDI technology. Mark your calendars.
You don't want to miss it!
