Lind & Kibbey Music Rolls
By Mark Reinhart

Thanks to all who posted in response to my query and Kibbey and
G. Edward Lind. Terry Smythe was kind enough to suggest some Music
Trade Review [MTR] articles to me. I put the following paragraphs
together about Kibbey and Lind to fill in some of the gaps. What
I learned was that there were connections between Kibbey and Lind
with other key players in the coin piano trade.

G. Edward Lind worked at Kibbey then left and worked for Automatic
Music Roll, the [distribution] subsidy of J. P. Seeburg Co. Automatic
Music Roll did not make their own music -- they bought rolls made by
others, acting as a resource to the trade. Before 1920 AMR sold coin
rolls made by QRS. Once Clark Orchestra Roll was established, they
became the source for AMR's music rolls.

G. Edward Lind prided himself on his ability to pick programs that
would generate better income for commercial users of automatic coin
pianos. In July 1920, G. Edward Lind began selling under his own name.
Using Clark as a source for his rolls, he still advertised that his
picks would be more productive to the commercial users. Given Lind's
long history with the coin trade, he probably was well-positioned to
accomplish that goal.

Kibbey Manufacturing Co.

H. C. Kibbey & Co. was organized in 1906 to handle instruments made
by Automatic Musical Co., Binghamton, New York. In January 1914,
G. Edward Lind, manager of Kibbey Manufacturing announced that his
company will soon supply rolls for Orchestrions containing pipes,
drums and all other instruments. F. H. Johnson replaces G. Edward
Lind in December 1914.

In May 1915 Kibbey announces in MTR that they produce endless and
rewind rolls for "practically every known Electric piano, Orchestrion
and Photoplayer." Kibbey announces they will cut rolls for Peerless
players in October 1915; Peerless 65- and 88-note rewind rolls will
be available after 01 December 1915.

In August, 1917, MTR announces that Leo Feist, Inc. secures a broad
restraining order against Kibbey Mfg. Co. Kibbey was enjoined from
reproducing, using, selling or disposing of any rolls containing Feist
musical compositions. This injunction could have been sufficient to
cause Kibbey to fail. I could not find an article mentioning the
closing of Kibbey nor any reason for failure. MTR Editor reports in
1920 that Kibbey was absorbed by Operators Piano "a couple years
before."

Automatic Music Roll Co.

G. Edward Lind takes charge of Seeburg music roll sales announced
November 1915. Automatic Music Roll Co. formed in 14 December 1915,
"succeeding roll department of J. P. Seeburg Piano Co. G. Edward Lind
will be in charge. Rolls will be furnished in both 65-note and 88-note
classes. January [1916] list to be completed in days." In February
1930 Clark announced in the Music Trade Review that they were to handle
servicing all Seeburg music roll orders formerly handled by Automatic
Music Roll Co.

G. Edward Lind

In July 1920, G. Edward Lind announces formation of company which
will specialize in 65-note 10-tune rewind rolls for standard automatic
instruments. G. Edward Lind opens a music roll store for automatic
electric pianos August 1920. Lind sells Clark rolls using the Clark
numbering of rolls. Lind advertises that they select only the best
titles for more profit. Lind advertises A, H, MSR and XP rolls in
June 1922.

Thanks also to the MBSI and Arcade Museum for making the Music Trade
Review and Presto available for on-line research.
