Ampico B owners are well aware that some "A" coded rolls don't sound
very good on the "B". The performance can fall flat, sounding at
half volume when full fortissimo is required. I've grappled with
that dilemma for years. Since I am a student of Ampico coding, and
understand the cause of this short coming, I embarked on a mission
to see if I could invent something to improve "A" roll performance.
I have succeeded.
Today, I played many "A" coded rolls on my "B" piano where I had
installed my new invention. The results were excellent. In fact,
on the rolls I played, I don't think anyone could find fault with the
performance.
My new gadget is simple. It has three tube connections that anyone
can make in less than five minutes time. The connections are made
by inserting "T's" into existing lines that are easily identified.
No modification is made to the existing "B" system.
Testing of my device will continue for some time. After that, I plan
to offer it to anyone who wants it. The cost will be modest. At only
2 inches by 3.5 inches in size, the unit will fit almost anywhere, and
it doesn't even need to be mounted.
This addition isn't a perfect replacement of "B" coding. It won't
add any "sub" intensities. Also, the "amplifier" coding that is
missing on "A" rolls is only partially synthesized. But the results
are satisfactory. The bottom line is that "B" owners who own "A" rolls
will vastly increase their choices of correct sounding rolls once this
little gadget is installed.
Some people have blamed the short coming of the "B" to properly play
"A" rolls on the absence of a bass crescendo. That is really not the
cause. Other factors are the real cause. Focusing on the real
factors, I was able to invent a simple solution that is effective.
The unit has one regulating screw that is used to bring it into balance
with a specific piano. Still under development is a cutout switch
that disables the unit when desired.
Progress on this device will be announced as it occurs. In the mean
time, "B" owners are encouraged to contact me. I want to know specific
rolls that owners want improved. If I own those rolls, I will test
them and let you know the results.
