Lack of Standardization in Piano Roll Box Sizes
The correct outside dimensions for standard "small" piano roll boxes are
2.25" wide
2" high
12.5" long
I think it was Frank Adams who many years ago started using oversize
boxes for his smaller recut rolls, and for some reason the trend caught
on among recutters. As a collector of original cabinets built for roll
storage, I find that when even slight warping of the shelves occurs,
oversize roll boxes will sometimes rub on top and bottom, and each
shelf may hold one roll fewer.
Over the years, supplier Durrell Armstrong had sold several variations
of the standard.
