I must sadly report that Olin Locke Tillotson, a longtime member
of MBSI, passed away on February 10th, at age 91. He was a frequent
contributor of articles to the MBSI Journal, with an almost
encyclopedic knowledge of music enabling him to help collectors and
restorers identify the music on cylinder music boxes with lost tune
cards, including even the most obscure pieces as often found on early
period keywind boxes.
His ability in this area was absolutely amazing. He could listen to
just a few bars of music and immediately tell me the source of the
piece, which opera it came from and who the composer was.
Olin was an avid collector of early key-wind music boxes and was
especially interested in researching the very rare single-comb
forte-piano movements marked with the name "Malignon", which research
has proven were actually made by Lecoultre, in Switzerland. Over the
years, he became a dear friend as we shared very similar interests,
and exchanged data on many unusual or rare music boxes. He was always
enthusiastic and glad to offer his help and extensive knowledge. He
will be missed by many.
If anyone wishes to attend, there will be a memorial service for him
on Saturday, March 11th, at 11 a.m., at Victory Memorial Park Funeral
Center, 14831 28th Avenue, Surrey, British Columbia.
