I'm happy to say that at least one of Randolph Herr's Steinway grands
made it's way into my possession. Fortunately with Jack Thalman's
help, a low-bid on live auctioneers and more than the cost of the piano
in shipping costs, the 1912 Metrostyle Themodist Ser. No. 156877
arrived safe and sound in Cleveland a couple months ago. It needed a
music desk, but again with Jack's help, that's been taken care of.
Oddly, the piano was in almost perfect tune upon arrival and only with
the recent change in weather the notes with two new strings went wildly
out of tune. It's transmission easily slips out of gear, its tracking
mechanism and its Tempo gauge are both missing, and its automatic
sustain function isn't automatic, but otherwise I'm happy with it, and
glad it didn't end up in the dump or somewhere in Poland.
One of the best parts of the deal was the roll of "Ain't We Got Fun"
that was in the piano on arrival.
