Repair of Duo-Art in Poughkeepsie, New York
By Andrew Barrett

Dear Ms. Bromage, It is good to see your post and to hear that you've
kept your Duo-Art and still use it for concerts, etc. That's wonderful.

To my knowledge there are still some good technicians in and around
upstate NY.

Probably the closest to you, with experience in reproducing pianos, is
Mr. Ben Gottfried of Richfield Springs. You can contact him via his
email and phone at the contact page on his website here:
http://bensplayerservice.com/contact/

To view some of Mr. Gottfried's work, check out his YouTube page here:

Second, I would recommend Mr. Thomas Ahearn of Haverhill,
Massachusetts. He's much further away (of course), but is excellent,
and I can vouch for this first hand having seen and heard the 9'
Chickering Ampico whose player he restored at the 2008 AMICA Convention
in Los Angeles. This is the most immaculate, perfectly restored piano
I've ever had the occasion to see, hear or view in my life. I hand
played it by the hour there, and there was absolutely nothing wrong
with it, and nothing remaining to be done on the restoration. It's the
finest 9' grand piano I've played in my life and better sounding (in my
opinion) than any 9' Steinway or Yamaha I've ever played, even several
in concert halls (in this case, credit goes to the original builders. I
think Chickering just might have built a better-sounding 9' piano, in
my opinion).

The restoration work of the piano itself (not the player action) of
this 9' Chickering was performed by Mr. Brian Grindrod of New
Hampshire, and based upon this one piano, in my personal opinion as a
musician, I would unhesitatingly recommend his piano restoration work
to anyone on the East Coast:

Here's Mr. Thomas Ahearn's info:

Of course, I should mention there are several other good technicians on
the East Coast who work on reproducing pianos including Mr. Bill
Maguire in Greenlawn, New York (Long Island), Mr. Herb Lindahl in
Connecticut, Mr. John Tuttle in New Jersey, and several others. They
all have good recommendations but I have not yet experienced their
restoration work first hand and seen and heard it. They can also be
found and contacted by clicking on the link to the East Coast
Technicians page on the Player-Care site above.

Hope this helps!
