I would just like to add to the discussion on Recordo expression pianos
by saying that these unique "hybrid" player pianos are available if you
look carefully at the postings for player pianos on Craigslist. Simply
look carefully at the tracker bars as shown in the pictures on the
postings. If no pictures are available, just email the piano owner and
ask for pictures of the spool box, taken _without_ a piano roll in place.
I spoke today with a guy in Cincinnati who has a rebuilt Milton "factory
electric" Recordo player for sale. The player appears to be either an
Auto Pneumatic or Standard Action with rotary pump, no foot pedals. He
was aware that his piano was "different" than other foot pumped players,
but he only knew that his had no foot pedals to operate it.
Although not rare, Recordo rolls are not as easy to find certainly as
regular 88-note rolls, but many times they are mixed in with large lots
of 88-note piano rolls. Most piano roll owners have no clue that Recordo
rolls are different than conventional non expression player rolls. In
the last month or so, I have acquired (very reasonably) approximately 50
new Recordo titles (original rolls). Many of these Recordo rolls were
made by QRS, but not all.
I will have to go back into the AMICA archives from the 1970s and read
about the complete history of the Recordo system and rolls that Bob and
Ginny Billings shared with the group at that time.
Happy hunting!
