I have decided to go ahead and go through with making the original
Steger action work again. Below is my statement concerning this
decision.
Well, I was wrong, after all. The two biggest problems that I have
partially solved with the Steger action, were leaky pneumatics and
inside valve facings that were too porous.
Apparently, the first (and only) restorer of this particular stack
neglected to re-leather the inside valves. He did a really good job on
the pouches in the main pneumatic decks and in the primary valve chest,
and the primary valves, but somehow those inside valves weren't on his
priority list. I remember that each time I put that Steger action into
the piano and pumped, most or almost all of the pneumatics would
immediately close and try to play.
If I had simply re-leathered the facings on those inside valves and
recovered the pneumatics, plus repairing the old broken lead and rubber
tubing, that player action would have been working long before now.
I realize just how much time I wasted trying to solve several
non-existent problems with the stack.
