Refinishing Shellac Based Finishes
By Bill Budenholzer

Besides a 1928 calendar at the front of the notebook, I'm not sure
of the dates from Uncle Gus's notebook. There are also stylized
illustrations typical of 1920's and 1930's popular literature.

It doesn't surprise me that Uncle Gus's recipe would strip the old
finish. I'd tend to believe his clients, of the period, wanted
a like-new appearance restored to their furniture and cabinets and
would not be concerned with "patina".
