Passing of Dave Morecraft, Steam Calliope Builder
By David Dewey
I read this posting by Fred Dahlinger with shock and great sadness.
I knew we'd lost someone in the calliope community based on a Facebook
notification email I got (I get the notifications, but my dial-up
connection seldom lets me actually go to Facebook, hence the dated
page I have) but I had no idea it would be Dave -- after all, he's
younger than I.
I feel privileged that I was able to work an afternoon with Dave and
his son Zachary on the Delta Queen's calliope. Dave was a very clever
person who really loved calliopes and built probably the finest
instruments to date. His whistles were works of art. He was a great
diplomat for the calliope -- which ain't easy to do, as it's hard to be
heard over one!
Dave was fun to be around, and was always very helpful in sharing
his knowledge. It is very appropriate that Travis Vasconcelos
officiated at his service, as they were good friends and Travis is
probably the best "Steam Piana Preffesor" we have today.
Dave was a giant in the calliope community and we have all lost a great
friend and the calliope hobby's leading genius.
